Session 5 From AlphaGo to ChatGPT: How “Strong” can AI be?

The session was moderated by YANG Yanqing, Head of Planning&Development Department at Shanghai AI Laboratory and Professor of Economics at Fudan University. The panelists included ESKO AHO, Former Prime Minister of Finland; ZHOU Wei, Vice President of OS Product at vivo and Head of vivo Global AI R&D Institute; YUAN Hui, CEO & Chairman of the Board, Xiao-I Corporation; HUANG Tiejun, President of Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence; C. L. Philip CHEN, Member of the Academy of Europe and Vice President of Chinese Association of Automation; DU Lan, Executive Director of Pearl River Investment Management Grop Co.,Ltd and President of Guangdong Artificial Intelligence Industry Association, and LI Zhu, Founding partner of Meta-Bounds. They engaged in discussions on the subject of artificial intelligence.

AHO pointed out that the emergence of AI is disruptive, facing many challenges, but it can also solve many problems. HUANG Tiejun stated that when AI develops to the AGI stage, it could be disruptive to human society, presenting enormous challenges that humanity has never encountered before. Humanity should approach this with caution. C. L. Philip CHEN discussed the perspective of large-scale and general AI, emphasizing that increasing the scale of AI can enhance its commercial and engineering applications. ZHOU Wei believed that scientists should strive to make theoretical large models truly leading and widely apply AI technology in practical life. YUAN Hui emphasized that the current underlying theoretical framework of algorithms, which has remained unchanged for the past 60 years, can only be fundamentally disrupted in the coming 5-10 years. DU Lan expressed that for humans, everyone hopes that technology originates from real-world demands and serves the real world. She hoped that the emergence of large models would highlight intelligent cockpits' ability to detect changes and intelligent driving. LI Zhu believed that AI needs augmented reality (AR) as a better interactive medium/interface with humans to provide more comprehensive training for AI models. This enables them to better understand the real world and understand humanity itself.

The panelists unanimously agreed that artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant breakthroughs in recent years, leading humanity into a whole new territory. In this territory, AI will become an excellent assistant to humans. While AI holds immense potential to empower the economy in the future, it also poses numerous challenges for humanity.
